Jane K. Tompkins

Jane joined the law firm of Weiss Serota Helfman Cole & Bierman, P.L. in 2015 as the firm’s first Professional Planner. Originally from the Midwest, Jane obtained a Bachelor’s in Finance and a Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Iowa and then went on to earn her J.D. from Northern Illinois University College of Law. She spent twenty years in various public sector positions, working in a wide range of planning and development matters. While working in the Chicago suburbs and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, she handled all of the usual current and long-range planning activities, including variance and zoning change requests, subdivision approvals, developing neighborhood plans, and drafting zoning code amendments and complete code rewrites. Other positions gained her experience in negotiating joint land use plans and boundary line agreements and reviewing annexation and municipal incorporation proposals. She’s also administered historic preservation programs and economic development assistance programs, and overseen federal housing assistance, grant, and brownfield redevelopment programs. Moving to Florida in 2011, Jane was hired as the City of Coral Gables’ first Development Services Director. In that capacity, she supervised the Building, Code Enforcement and Planning & Zoning Divisions. Her planning and legal background is proving useful in her position with Weiss Serota where she assists municipal clients with sign code rewrites and development project review. Jane is certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and has been active in the American Planning Association.
