Dr. Goldstein served on the Gainesville City Commission from 1978-1984, and also served as Mayor-Commissioner for the City of Gainesville (1980-1981).  Dr. Goldstein is a research scientist, and since 1982 he has been the Chairman of the Mammatech Corporation. While serving on the Gainesville City Commission, Dr. Goldstein initiated a successful effort to eliminate billboards in the City of Gainesville. Dr. Goldstein was a Democratic candidate for governor of Florida in 1986, and authored the book, "A Citizen's Platform," outlining specific public interest reforms needed in Florida.

The following are quotes from his book:  "We as a people exhibit the world's greatest collective courage and bravery when our democracy is threatened from without, but when confronted with the degradation of our own system from within we sometimes fail to even get involved.   have wondered many times since serving in the 60's with the U.S. Marine Corps as a Naval Officer how to convert the incredible fearlessness evidenced by men and women in service of our country to political fearlessness in private life. This ultimate irony of our great democracy remains a great concern to me - that we will die for our system of government but fail to expel its devils in order to rescue it. ...  We as a people have increasingly allowed the press to speak for us.  We have encouraged editorial writers to exhibit courage for us in political matters.  In fact, they frequently do. That explains why so many politicians and public officials attack the press.  They regularly assault the communicator of their own deeds (the press) in an attempt to rearrange the public's understanding of those deeds and their intentions.  Surprisingly this trick sometimes works and the messenger rather than the perpetrator is wrongly condemned."
